Theses are also referred to as Bike Racks, they are essentially a device in which bicycles can be secured to. Sometimes they are attached to the ground or the side of a building, other units are free standing. The first of these to be manufactured used to offer a means to secure one wheel, they were often a forked piece of metal in which the front wheel of the bike was held in between or grooved concrete in the ground. A lot of bikes have quick release wheels making these devices not very effective, all a thief would need to do is detach the front wheel, and then they could take off with the bike. The support they offer was also not very good and a lot of bikes in a row would often topple like dominoes. Cyclists often referred to these systems as ‘Wheel Benders’.
Over the years more modern versions where designed like the ‘Sheffield Stand’.
